Personal development

As mentioned at the beginning of the year, boys will participate in a couple of discussion lessons on puberty and changes they will be starting to face in the near future. These lessons will happen next week with Mr Pyefinch. Boys will be encouraged to ask any questions they are unsure about and Mr Pyefinch will also address any misconceptions they have.

This would obviously be a great opportunity for you as parents at home to follow up with what boys have they have learnt or discussed in class and begin some open communication with them. Some questions may not be appropriate for a Year 6 classroom and therefore Mr Pyefinch may refer them to talk to you about them at home.

Water filters

Boys started planning their water filters on Monday this week. They are going to construct, test and modify this Monday coming. All boys have been asked to collect the materials they need from home over this week. The main body of the water filter has to be a 1.25L and then boys have been given choices about what materials they are going to collect to use along with their bottle. Please don't forget boys as everything must be constructed at school on Monday. Good luck!

Broken Glass - class novel

Today we started our pre-reading activity for our class novel. Unfortunately we ran out of time to answer all the questions so boys have been asked to finish their research of the author and dot points on their predict-o-gram for Thursday. This should only take around 10 minutes and will mean we can start reading the novel on Thursday in class before we go to the Athletics Carnival.

Adding and subtracting positive and negative numbers

Today boys were introduced to negative numbers. We discussed what they are, where we see them and how they are used. With the use of a number line we explored how to analyse which numbers are bigger or smaller in comparison. Afterwards we practiced adding negative numbers by negative numbers, positive numbers with negative numbers and negative numbers with positive numbers.

Tomorrow we will be looking further into subtracting negative numbers and comparing temperatures on thermometers.

Below is a great website that the boys can access to help them:

Mini excursion

This week all boys from 6LG and 6JL will be heading up to Lake Claremont for lunch and a bit of exploring. We will be analysing the water quality of the area which we will then be able to compare to the water quality down at Kooringal in Term 4. This is a big focus for us in Science this term and boys will be even making their own water filters in the coming weeks.

A note will be coming home tonight regarding what the boys need to bring; sport uniform, small backpack to carry lunch, water bottle and alternative footwear for exploring on the edge of the lake.

We will be leaving at the end of Period 4 and returning to school in Period 6. Any boys who have music lessons during this time have been asked to please speak to their teachers to rearrange well in advance.

Hopefully it will be a beautiful, sunny day for us boys! :)

Debating

What a fantastic week for debating last week. All students were able to present a very persuasive speech that assisted their teams in making a clear point about their particular issues. It was fantastic to see all boys on every team contribute to the rebuttal even if they weren't the third speaker. I was incredibly impressed with the calibre and blown away by how many boys had listened to feedback from their previous speeches and make improvements to their own presenting styles.

Congratulations to all boys for achieving such success!

Our class can't wait for our Father / Son debate now! Good luck to Fletch, Ollie. S and Charlie who have all been selected by the boys to represent them.

Swan River catchment

Today boys discussed and investigated what a catchment is and what/where the Swan River Catchment area is.

Some interesting facts we learnt are:
-A catchment is an area of land that catches precipitation before it runs off into a water system.
-The catchment area is 125, 000 square km
-Tributaries are water systems that contribute water to the Swan River

Some vocabulary we discussed was:
-metropolitan
-commercial
-industrial
-recreation
-agriculture
-flora and fauna
-industrial

Here are some websites we looked at:

Reminder for Wednesday - enrichment and jumps

Just a quick reminder to everyone that triple and long jump will take place at lunch time on the oval tomorrow so remember to go support your house and your friends.

Due to house shout, enrichment will take place in P5. Please remember boys involved.

Good luck to all boys participating in their debates tomorrow as well. Due to enrichment in P5 we will now be running the first two debates in P2. Our class can't wait to see all your hard work come together!

Science - water tension

Today students completed an investigation into how many water droplets they could fit on a 5c piece. There was a range of fantastic discussion and vocabulary. I was extremely impressed with all the boys effort and focus throughout the activity.

We discussed in detail as a class variables today. Parents, you may like to ask your child to explain what variables are and how they effect scientific investigations.

A big birthday week!

This Wednesday we have not 1, not 2, but 3 birthdays in our class. We are very excited to be celebrating Ed and Fletcher's Birthdays. Who can believe they were born the same day, same hospital but only a few hours apart!

We will also be celebrating Miss Hoad's birthday. Miss Hoad predominately works with Julian in our classroom, but she also helps the other boys in a range of activities. As a special surprise we are having a tea cup full of fresh flowers delivered to school that our class captains will present to her, along with a card we have all signed. Please try and keep this a secret boys and remember to sign the card today or tomorrow morning.
